20th May 2022

Dear parents/ carers,

I want to start by saying how proud I am of our wonderful Year 2’s.  This week, they have undertaken their statutory assessments in English and maths.  All of the children should be so proud of themselves for their resilience and determination during these assessments.  Although we regularly assess the children through the year to establish progress and attainment, the statutory tests can be daunting for such young children.

Miss Jeremy, Mrs deHowes and Mrs Richardson did a fabulous job at providing a calm and relaxed environment.  Thank you to my wonderful staff for supporting during this week too.

With the latest round of assessments completed for this half term, we can now focus on our Jubilee celebrations for the final week of this half term, where all classes will be engaging in a mix of different activities, all linked to the Platinum Jubilee.

A reminder that on Thursday, it is ‘dress as a Royal day’  please don’t panic if you can’t think of an outfit or your child would rather not dress up.  You could always go with a red, white and blue theme for the day!

We also have the Year 3 and 4 production of Aladdin to look forward to on Tuesday, again a reminder, we won’t be issuing tickets.  As this is the first production that families have been able to attend in two years, I’m expecting quite a turnout; just be prepared to stand as we have limited seating available!

This week, Year 1 had a trip to Colchester Castle.  Thank you so much to our lovely parent helpers, Jaz and Nora, who supported the children so brilliantly.

I thought you’d like to know what the children wrote about it:

‘We met Lady Bethany.  We went inside the castle.  We got into groups so we didn’t get lost.  My favourite bit was the dungeon because it was dark.”  by Seth

‘When we went to Colchester Castle we met Lady Bethany.  She told us about Colchester Castle.  We were split into groups and it was cool.  When we had lunch I had a salmon sandwich and a sausage roll.  We went on the roof because we were pretending we were shooting arrows.’  by Carter

House Points:  Well done to the RED Team who were first placed this week.

Finally, to mark the Essex Year of Reading 2022, Essex County Council has been working on a range of initiatives to inspire every child in Essex to become a confident reader and develop a lifelong love of reading.

To achieve these goals, it is vital that every child has access to engaging reading materials and resources, giving them the opportunity to discover what topics, style and formats are right for them.

I am really pleased that all primary schools have been provided with their very own library card and bookmark, which we will be handing out to children on Monday.  Each library card has its own unique bar code, so all children need to do is bring this card along to any Essex Library to register it in their name and they can get started right away.  Children can use their library card to choose books, join in with out of school activities, access homework help, use free computers and lots more.

For details on the location of your nearest library and more information, please visit: www.libraries.essex.gov.uk

Parents and carers can also download the free Essex Year of Reading app to discover further online reading materials, fun activities and competitions for children and families to take part in.  Visit www.essexyearofreading.co.uk for more information.

That’s it for this week, have a fabulous weekend and here’s to a great week of activities next week.

With best wishes,

Kim
