11th February 2022

Dear parents/ carers,

We made it to the end of another half term!  Before I get into the news of the week, I would like to thank you all so much for your continued support and understanding during some of the toughest few weeks due to Covid and absence lately; Henham is such a special place; thank you!

Sports news:

Key Stage 1 Cross Country:  What a wonderful effort the children made during this event at Howe Green.  Olivia, Florrie, Penny, Sophia, Lucy, Poppy, Freya, Iris, Ronnie, Freddie, James, Davey, Dylan, Herbie and Nate from Year 1.  Thea, Hugo, Henry, Oliver and Ned from Year 2.

The children were superstars and should be very proud of themselves.  A special well done to Florrie for coming in first for the Year 1 girls team!

Thank you so much to Mrs Espie, Mrs Pratt, Helen Hawker and Sam Clayden for supporting the children through this event!

Key Stage 2 Swimming Gala: A huge well done to the children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 who attended the swimming gala.  Attending these events after such a long gap isn’t easy, and for some children they really had to dig deep into their resilience bowl this morning to attend.  I am so proud of them all. Twenty three children represented Henham brilliantly, swimming a variety of events from individual 25m races in freestyle, breast stroke and backstroke; some swimming a 50m champion race and others representing the school in the galas, both freestyle and individual medley. They were really well behaved and cheered each other on well. For a lot of children they had never taken part in a swimming gala before and said they would definitely do it again. For some (Year 3s) it was their first ever sporting event for the school – you wouldn’t know – they asked lots of questions but were keen to be involved; kept nerves to a minimum and came out of the pool smiling. A big mention should go to some of the Year 5 boys who swam as Year 6s and did brilliantly in their events. No results yet but will post them in the next newsletter! A massive thank you to Miss Branch, Miss Gilbert and Mrs Heslop for helping out all morning!

The attendees were:  Year 3 – Max, Joshua, Marlie; Year 4 – Dot, Olivia S, Liv H, Teddy, Alfie, Bertie; Year 5 – Willow, Molly, Franklin, Toby, Pawel, Louis C, Lewis K, Charlie, George, Thomas H, Wilf; Year 6 – Alina; Poppy; Grace; Halle.

House Points:  The PURPLE team have done it again!  Congratulations Purple Team!

Pilot visit!  Year 1 had a special visitor this week – a real life pilot!  The wonderful Mr Maddox, gave up his time to be put in the hotseat!  Linked to their topic ‘Up in the Air’, Simon came in to talk to the class about his job as a pilot.  The children looked at photographs of the type of plane he flies and must have found out what every button and lever in the cock pit would be used for!  Their inquisitive minds enabled them to ask so many questions!  Thank you so much Mr Maddox.

In case of bad weather!  I’m not expecting bad weather, but I thought it would be useful to update you on what would happen if the school had to close due to bad weather, or any other emergency reason, for example no heating/ water etc.

School closure information would be posted on the Essex schools closure list website, which can be found here: https://www.essex.gov.uk/emergency-school-closures I would also put a note onto the school Facebook page.  If the admins of the individual class WhatsApp or Facebook groups would like to make contact with me, I will also contact those parents so this information could be posted on your class pages.

In line with ECC guidance, in the event of an emergency closure, we would not revert to online learning for the period of closure.

Online safety:  I’m sure you are aware, but I feel I need to raise the concern over children accessing inappropriate trailers and programmes on Netflix and other online platforms.  We have had many children across the school talking about Squid Games, which is aimed at audiences 15 and over.   Thank you.

Staffing: Today we said goodbye to our lovely Miss Gilbert.  She has touched the lives of so many children at Henham and will be greatly missed by us all.  We all wish her much love and happiness as she starts her new post after the half term.

I am delighted to be able to advise you that we have two new members of staff starting at Henham after the half term.

Mrs Sarah Miley will be joining the school as a Learning Support Assistant in Year 6, and Mrs Sarah Treacy will be joining the Nursery Team.

We look forward to welcoming them to the Henham family.

GDPR: The lovely Mrs Hipperson has been busily updating all our GDPR privacy notices and information, and this has all been uploaded to our website; it even includes a child friendly privacy notice!

That’s it from me for this half term; I hope you all manage to have a lovely break, whatever you plan on doing, and I look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 21st February for the second half of the spring term.

With my continued best wishes,

Kim
