Geography

At Henham and Ugley we use Kapow as a scheme of learning.

What is Geography?

Geography is the study of people, places and environments. In geography we learn what places are like at different scales, and how people interact with these different environments. It helps us to be socially and environmentally sensitive, informed and responsible citizens.

Subject Intent - Geography

At Henham and Ugley, Geography guides children to make sense of the world by organising and connecting information and ideas about people, places, processes and environments. They begin to work with complex information about the world, including the relevance of people's attitudes, values and beliefs.

We aim to inspire curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people. We intend to equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge through studying places, people and natural and human environments. We intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration of the local area and research into those further afield to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.

By the time children leave our school, they will have built up their knowledge of Geographical Skills and Fieldwork, Locational Studies, Human and Physical Geography and Place Studies- based on the National Curriculum framework.

Progression of Skills

At Henham and Ugley, our learning builds up over time, as demonstrated by the progression map below.

Assessment

Children are assessed termly using teacher’s professional judgement and by work evidenced in lessons, against the criteria from the National Curriculum.

If you wish to find out more about the subject of Geography please talk to the subject leader Jess Laird, at the school.
