What is Grammar and Punctuation?

Grammar encompasses word order (syntax), tenses (past, present and future) and different word types (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc) English grammar is the foundation of good communication, reading comprehension, writing and story-telling. This is why teaching grammar is so important for our young children at Henham.

Punctuation helps clarify the meaning of texts by indicating where sentences begin and end, adding extra information, and showing when a character is speaking. Punctuation marks include full stops, question marks, exclamation points, commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, hyphens, parentheses, brackets, braces, apostrophes, quotation marks, and ellipsis.

What does it look like at Henham?

Grammar and punctuation are taught in line with our writing curriculum. Skills are taught explicitly, and children are taught how to embed these skills in their writing.

Assessment of Grammar and Punctuation.

Teachers assess through marking of written work and through the GPS assessments which take place at 3 points throughout the year.
