Handwriting

What is handwriting?

Handwriting is learning letter formation: Children learn to form letters correctly, including capital letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. They also learn to identify which letters belong to the same handwriting family

What does it look like at Henham?

Handwriting is a complex skill that develops over time. To learn handwriting, children need to combine fine motor skills, language, memory and concentration. They also need to practise and follow instructions. Handwriting starts with scribing and drawing then moves on to forming letters, words and sentences. This starts in EYFS through to year 6, practising and refining skills on a daily basis.

Assessment of handwriting.

Teachers monitor handwriting through the daily lessons making adjustments to teaching where necessary and giving personalised support where needed. This could be children needing writing slopes or pencil grips.
