What is English?

English and Literacy

The national curriculum for English aims to promote high standards of language and literacy by providing pupils with a strong understanding of the spoken and written word. Pupils should be able to read easily and fluently, acquire a wider vocabulary and an understanding of grammar and punctuation. As the understanding of the English language underpins all areas of education, pupils should be able to apply phonic knowledge and respond to questions.

Here are the areas of English and literacy covered by the national curriculum:

  • Spoken language
  • Reading - word reading
  • Reading - comprehension
  • Writing - transcription
  • Writing - composition
  • Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation
  • Spelling and handwriting
