11th October 2019
Dear parents/ carers,
What a wonderful end to the week we had with Year 5 sharing their learning with us. Such a wonderful turnout of families made the assembly even more special. The children performed brilliantly and took us back in time so creatively with ‘This is your life’. Well done Year 5, you should all be very proud of yourselves.

Something different this week, a report from Mrs Nicholls who took a group of children to our first ever golf tournament! Thank you Mrs Nicholls.
On Thursday, the Henham and Ugley Golf Team, Louis (Y4), Oscar (Y4), Jude (Y4) and Sebastien (Y5) headed to Chesterford Research Park Golf Course to take part in a golf tournament against six other schools. The hilly, par 3 course showcased the boy’s golfing skills excellently; Jude’s straight drives from the tee, Sebastien’s consistent fairway shots, Oscar’s accurate putting whilst Louis’ tee shot on the last hole travelled well over 100 yards! All golfers were exemplary ambassadors of the school, displaying excellent sportsmanship and an obvious enjoyment of golf.

In more sports news, a netball report from Kitty and Chloe in Year 6:
On the 9th of October, Henham netball team played a tough match against Howe Green School. Our team was Ethan, Chloe, Kitty, Robin, Clem, Amy & India. In the 1st quarter, Howe Green dominated, we defended hard, played hard, but they had more possession so scored four times.
In the 2nd quarter, Ethan scored Henham’s first goal! He scored with a very good pass from Kitty who was playing Centre at the time. It was then 4-1 to the opposition. Henham continued to play a lot stronger during this quarter because we stayed on our players and we knew their strengths and weaknesses, but still Howe Green scored another one making it 4-1. We regained possession and managed to get the ball up to where we were shooting but did not score that time.
Into the 3rd quarter, a good strong pass in from Clem who managed to get into the D and Kitty scored Henham’s second goal. She had a good few passes from Chloe, Robin and India who intercepted the ball many times and cleared it out to Amy who then did a very strong pass to Kitty who got it in the net. Another goal for Henham making it 4-3. India also got some very good passes from Clem and Amy into the D and scored two important goals for Henham. Howe Green also got another two.
As we entered the final quarter, we had everything to play for! We had narrowed the gap and were now trailing by just one goal (6-5). Howe Green scored another two quick goals and demonstrated some great fast passing skills. The final whistle blew with the end score being 8-6 to Howe Green. Well done to all.

Is your child in Year 3 or 4? If so, Year 3/4 Netball Club meets on Wednesdays from 3.15-4.15pm. They are looking for more members so that they can begin to play matches against local schools. The club is run by the lovely Torz Kemp and will be held in the school hall when wet or cold. Please contact the school office to add your child’s name to the club or for more information.
Look out for a round-up of our sporting events this half term in next week’s newsletter!

M Day Thursday 24th October – On Thursday 24th October we will be having our termly Mental Health Day (M Day). The children will be taking part in a Bounce session, yoga, craft and drama activities. On this day the children can wear non- school uniform, they might like to wear yellow clothes (to represent a splash of sunshine) but please don’t go to extra expense. Weather permitting, we are hoping to have a campfire. Mrs Cowell was wondering if there were a couple of parents willing to give up some time to help with the campfire on this day. Please let the office know if you are able to help.

Playleaders – I am very pleased to announce that Mrs Cowell has been training up the Year 6 children to be Playleaders at lunchtimes. We are encouraging Year 6 to take on a positive role as citizens of the school and support the younger children in play and with any problems they might have in the playground. Just to let you know we will be introducing the Playleaders to the rest of the school at the end of the Year 6 Sharing Assembly on Friday 18th October.

Music Lessons – Our peripatetic woodwind, brass, guitar and piano teachers are able to take on new pupils from January 2020. They are happy to give tasters to children who are unsure which instrument to choose. Likewise, if there are any budding violin or cello players out there, please do let us know so that we can arrange for these instruments to be taught as well.

Parent Consultations – a reminder that on-line booking is now live. Please book via your Sco Pay account and please do contact the office if you have any problems.
