RE

What is RE?

Religious education is the study of faiths and beliefs across the world. As a British school, we embrace different cultures and beliefs and learn how to explore our own, and other people's, beliefs and ideas.

Curriculum Intent

At Henham and Ugley Primary and Nursery School we believe in introducing our pupils to a wide range of religions, belief systems and cultures.  We encourage our pupils to critically explore and question these in a respectful and tolerant way.  We believe that in doing so our pupils will develop the skills required to become free thinkers who develop religious literacy and progress into adult life able to listen to, and question, their experiences with respect for the multi-cultural and diverse world we live in.

We value the religious background of all members of the school community and believe RE has an important role for the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We promote respect towards those with other faiths and beliefs than our own.  We encourage the children to develop their own sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection.

Progression of skills

At Henham and Ugley Primary and Nursery School, our learning is progressive, which we demonstrate through the uploaded progression map below.

Assessment in RE

All teaching staff currently assess children after each unit of study - using their professional judgement and the evidence gained during lessons.  Much of this assessment may be based on verbal contribution as RE is a subject that lends itself to discussion.

If you wish to discuss the RE curriculum further, please contact the subject leader Helen Aves.
